Longworth Education Foundational Course - Urges

Key points:
  • Also known as brain schemas
  • Urges must be played through until a child no longer has the compulsion
  • Adding learning into an urge is the most relevant context for a Year 0/1 student.
  • Social skills are best learned in situations where students are engaged through their urges.  For example, children learn best to share in a context driven by their current urge as the need to be part of the learning is the highest level of intrinsic motivation.
Next steps:
  • Identifying urges in play for individual students
  • Deciding how best to support the most relevant learning in this context.  Start with the social skills development
Evidence:

Transportation urge

Transortation urge meets Construction urge.  Social skills development.
